with Ven. Tenzin Sangmo

About the Retreat

Join Ven. Tenzin Sangmo for a 4-day Shamatha meditation retreat at Thosamling Nunnery. Learn essential mindfulness techniques, develop focused attention, and cultivate inner peace. April 17-20.

Immerse yourself in the foundational meditation practices of the Buddhist tradition. Designed to cultivate a relaxed, stable, and clear mind, Shamatha meditation is suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners. Whether you practice for a few minutes daily or engage in intensive meditation training over days, months, or even years, our retreat offers a transformative experience.

Beginner-Friendly Mindfulness Meditation

Our Shamatha Retreat is an ideal opportunity for beginners to learn meditation techniques in a serene retreat environment. With step-by-step guidance, participants will learn how to focus and concentrate their minds effectively. This retreat also caters to seasoned meditators aiming to enhance their focused attention, reduce anxiety, and deepen the practice.

Benefits of Shamatha Practice

Participants will be introduced to essential tools for developing mindfulness and introspection. Learn to overcome common obstacles in Shamatha practice through training that includes Mindfulness of Breathing, Observing Mental Events, and Understanding the Nature of Consciousness. Achieve body relaxation, inner silence, attention stability, and vividness through these practices.

Guided by Experienced Practitioners

Guided by one of our resident nuns in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, our sessions alternate between sitting and walking meditations. Discover how to integrate meditation into your daily life to cultivate a focused, clear, and calm mind, and advance through the stages of Shamatha.

About the Teacher

Venerable Sangmo is originally from the Netherlands. In her early years, she worked with grassroots organizations before pursuing a career as a nurse. She later moved to India with the intention of learning Tibetan, as her teacher, Geshe Konchog Lhundup, hoped she would become his translator. However, life took a different path.

In 1997, she took Getsul ordination with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and after four years as a nun, she founded Thosamling Nunnery. She completed a two-month and a six-week Shamatha retreat. While she does not consider herself a teacher, she is dedicated to facilitating introductions to Shamatha retreats and sharing her personal experiences with students.

We like to give you the opportunity to do so if it doesn’t conflict with the schedule of Thosamling. If you are interested, please check with the office the possibility for staying longer.
