Thosamling – Nunnery and Institute

Thosamling is an international Nunnery for Buddhist nuns and female lay practitioners, living and studying within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. For our study and practice we draw inspiration from all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

Thosamling is located in the quiet foothills of the spectacular Dhauladhar Range of the Himalayas. This places us close to renowned teachers from all four Buddhist lineages, such as His Holiness the Dalai Lama, His Holiness Gyalwa Karmapa, Khamtrul Rinpoche, Tai Situ Rinpoche, and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.

We provide a unique opportunity for Buddhist nuns and lay women who wish to have the Dharma as the central focus in their life, by offering a conducive environment for study and practice.

We are in particular a place of refuge for newly ordained nuns, giving them a firm foundation in study and practice. We offer an extensive Buddhist philosophy study program, a Tibetan language course, and we offer training in ritual practices, such as pujas, and in the preliminary practices. By nurturing and supporting the Sangha jewel we in turn create a community that inspires others to practice Dharma for the benefit of all.

Our main focus is to support the flourishing of Dharma throughout the world. Thosamling has a comprehensive Buddhist philosophy program. This supports the sangha by providing them with opportunities to listen to, reflect, and meditate on the teachings of the Buddha.

For many years this program was taught by LharampaGeshe Tsewang Nyima. After his retirement in 2018, LharampaGeshe Ngawang Theckchock has become our new resident teacher in 2019. Geshe Tsewang Nyima still visits Thosamling Nunnery occasionally.

As part of our commitment to supporting and spreading the Dharma, Thosamling provides, besides the Buddhist philosophy program, a Tibetan language course. Learning the Tibetan language is very beneficial to all practitioners, as it allows engaging in direct contact with our precious teachers. Studying the Buddha Dharma in Tibetan helps to deepen the understanding of the meaning of the teachings. It also opens the door to opportunities for translating and interpreting Buddhist teachings.

Besides engaging in the philosophy and language program, at Thosamling we offer the opportunity to experience what it is to practice together. Each year we have a summer retreat during the rainy season, and a winter retreat. In between these retreats we organize 10-day retreats or teaching events, and on a regular basis we organize 4-day shamatha retreats. Besides that, we offer guidance, support, and a conducive environment for those who would like to do a personal retreat.

Thosamling has several community projects, such as an organic garden, a no-waste project, which help us to become a self-sustainable community.

Although Thosamling is primarily a nunnery, its ability to survive and prosper is dependent on a strong and vibrant international community of Dharma practitioners. We invite you to learn more about our programs and community and come visit us for a tour or stay.

“I am impressed with the progress that Thosamling Institute has made so far and happily offer my encouragement and moral support. I would like to request other people who may also be interested, to extend whatever assistance they can, financial or otherwise, to help ensure the success of this worthy project.”  His Holiness the Dalai Lama
