The Wheel of Sharp Weapons
23 – 27 August 2023
with Geshema Dawa Dolma
The text “The Wheel of Sharp Weapons” is in the lojong tradition of mind training and was written by the Indian master Dharmarakshita at the beginning of the 11th century.
In this text Dharmarakṣita explains how all the suffering we experience in this life is the result of non-virtuous actions that we created in the past. These negative actions were motivated by our self-centered attitude – our self-cherishing mind – and are now coming back to us.
It is our own self-cherishing that leads us to harm others, which in turn creates the negative karma or potential for future suffering. It is our self-cherishing mind that is the cause of all our pain and suffering, and is therefore seen as our real enemy.
Although the emphasis of the text lays on explaining the disadvantages of the self-cherishing mind, Dharmarakṣita also suggests virtuous or positive actions to substitute our previous negative behavior. These actions will create positive karma, which will lead to future pleasant conditions and experiences of happiness. He elaborates on the practice of giving and taking (tong-len).
This course on The Wheel of Sharp Weapons is taught by our resident Geshema Dawa Dolma who is well known for her down to earth approach, and her understanding of the modern mind.
